This is a joint venture initiated in 2004, between GBA CARES (Civic and Religious Emergency Services (CARES), which is a division of Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation, GEDCO). This program provides work opportunities for Govans area youths, while also assisting businesses, neighbors, schools and religious organizations with part-time assistance.
The youths are trained in resume preparation, interviewing, work ethics, (as well as some limited financial savings techniques). They are generally 14-16 years old - that tough age when it is hard to get a job, and they are anxious for as much work as they can get. They have been doing odd jobs such as cleaning, yardwork, trash pickup, snow shoveling, stuffing envelopes, sorting mailings, distributing flyers, hauling debris, etc. There are a few youths who are 16, therefore they may legally use power operated machinery. GBA funds a weekly street cleaning effort to help tackle the on-going trash issues, as well as beautification projects (such as planting tree pits and street planters) along York Road. This also provides these youths with consistently scheduled work.
GBA coordinates scheduling, taxes, payroll, etc. and much of the supervision. The program has really been well received, and there are some very pleased repeat customers already. Businesses and residents are encouraged to utilize this valuable opportunity by hiring these youths. Brochures and resumes are available.
